2005 A-10 Volleyball All-Conference Teams Announced

  • A-10 Volleyball All-Conference Teams

    Faye Barhorst, UD
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Dayton junior middle blocker Faye Barhorst and senior teammate Nicole Schott earned 2005 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Setter of the Year honors, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches.

In that same vote, setter Jenn Welsh of Xavier was tabbed Rookie of the Year and Dayton's Tim Horsmon was named Coach of the Year. Additionally, Xavier senior outside hitter Kate Duchek was named Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year in voting by the Conference's sports information directors.

Barhorst is the third straight Flyer to earn the Player of the Year honor and enters the Atlantic 10 Championship as the league-leader in hitting percentage with a .390 clip, which also ranks 22nd nationally. She is third in the Conference in blocks (1.31) and fourth overall in kills per game (3.97). A native of Fort Loramie, OH, the junior was twice named the A-10 Player of the Week this season and earned All-Conference honors as a sophomore after being named the 2003 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. She helped lead Dayton to the top-seed in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship.

Schott becomes the first setter from Dayton to earn Setter of the Year honors since the award began in 2001. The Roscoe, IL, native averages 11.62 assists overall to rank fourth in the Conference. She ranks second all-time at UD with 4,372 career assists and is just one of two players ever to record three 1,000-assist seasons as she has 1,359 assists this year, the eighth most in UD single-season history. She posted a career-high 76 assists on Oct. 27 against Xavier.

Joining Barhorst and Schott on the All-Conference first-team are Alma Arroyo and Lisa Newell of Charlotte; Fordham's Marija Markovic; Tatyana Menshikova of Saint Louis; Temple's Yue Liu and Zhen Jia Liu; and Kate Duchek of Xavier.

The All-Conference second-team is comprised of Charlotte's Eden Ramos; Robynne Green of Dayton; Duquesne's Diana Wuebker; Abigail Hatter of George Washington; La Salle's Carolyn Judge; Patricia Vernon of Temple; and Astyn Bjorklund, Jill Quayle and Danielle Skrajewski of Xavier.

Welsh enjoyed an outstanding rookie season at Xavier. The setter from Goodland, IN, garnered a Conference-high six Rookie of the Week honors. Despite less than one season under her belt, she is currently in seventh place all-time in Xavier history for career assists with 1,356. She recorded over 45 assists in 19 separate matches and had over 60 assists on six different occasions.

Welsh is joined on the rookie team by Carly Romberg of Charlotte; Dayton's Kortney Norris; Christa Dominick of La Salle; Rhode Island's Leslie Wiekamp; Lauren Christman of Saint Louis; and Patricia Vernon of Temple.

Duchek is the Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season and is a two-time member of the A-10 Academic All-Conference team. She currently leads Xavier in kills (412), kills per game (4.00), aces (31), aces per game (0.31), points (474.5) and points per game (4.61), and ranks third in the league in kills per game. The outside hitter from St. Louis, MO, was named A-10 Player of the Week (9/26) and earned 2004 third team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, as well as first team All-District honors. She boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a middle childhood education major and has been named to the Dean's List every semester since starting at Xavier.

Along with Duchek, the Academic All-Conference volleyball team consists of teammates Jordan Brightwell and Danielle Skrajewski; Alma Arroyo and Eden Ramos of Charlotte; Duquesne's Diana Wuebker and Erin McClanahan of Saint Louis.

Horsmon, in his third season, receives his first Coach of theYear award after leading his Flyers to a 12-1 Conference ledger and the top-seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship. His squad enters the Championship riding a 15-match winning streak and is looking for its third straight A-10 title. During his tenure at Dayton, Horsmon has coached three consecutive A-10 Players of the Year and competed in two NCAA Tournaments (2003, 2004). His players have won three honorable mention All-America honors. The 1991 graduate of Frostburg State posts a seven-year career coaching record of 167-78.
